Pampas grass is one of the most unique species of grass that has been found. Pamaps grass has a different tone to it that sets it apart from other grasses. There a lot of reasons or more likely to be called, qualities that makes pampas grass so admirable and hugely popular. Pampas grass is originally found all over South America, it is wide spread because of its ability to produce a large number of seeds which works to its advantage. It lets the seeds be carried by the whiffs of air spread and grow in different regions. The grass is found all over South America for this reason.
Usually the Pampas grass can grow up to a height of 3 meters that almost comes out to be 9 feet. This leads to the grass being a good food stock for animals. The grass is long and slender and is widely appreciated for this reason. The grass being long provides a lot of food for livestock. The height makes each grass appropriately enough to feed a good amount of cattle’s, bulls or sheep’s. Pampas grass is also known as Cortaderia selloana. The grass was named by Alexander von Humboldt in 1818, after the German botanist and naturalist Friedrich Sellow, but its more common name that is Pampas grass is given to it because it is also found in Pampas the region. This is the reason the grass is mostly referred to as Pampas rather then the long elongated name given by both the scientists who studied flora in Brazil.
It is Pampas grasses these qualities that it was introduced in Europe and North America, mostly it was meant to be good food for the livestock. It was hugely popular due to the fact that it produces around 1 million seeds in its life time which when carried by the wind scatter across the meadows or fields. This scattering creates the effect of the grass being widespread and being available to the livestock to feed on and not having the farmer or its cultivators having to plant it again and again.
The reproduction capability of the plant also makes it a problem in certain regions due to its fast growth. The fast spread leads to problems for other vegetations, this is the reason why Pampas grass is not that popular despite being a great solution to a farmers livestock needs. The grass is also popular because of its ornamental value the grass was favored for its beautiful heads; these heads were dried and displayed in houses earlier. The Pampas grass is also resistant to variation in weather and water and sunlight levels. Making it a preferred plant for farmers and cultivators alike.
